Every ten years, CUHK's student union and student press write their own history of the University. This series, which has run parallel to the official university histories for half a century since CUHK at Ten (1973), is most recently represented by CUHK at Forty (2004) and CUHK at Fifty (2015). This page does one thing only: it sets out the edition details and the available download / reading access points for these two books. It does not paraphrase their contents.

Note on scope. This page is a bibliographic index. It lists publication details and external access points only; it does not summarise, paraphrase, or comment on the views or positions taken in the articles the books collect. Readers should return to the originals and judge for themselves. Both books are non-official publications self-financed by student organisations, with no institutional relationship to the University's official histories (such as A University in the Making).

2. CUHK at Forty (2004) — no PDF, but the full text is online

The compilation of CUHK at Forty spanned two and a half years. According to the publication details the Editorial Board left on its contents page, the book was first discussed in December 2001, an editorial board was formed in July 2002, the publication date printed in the book is February 2004, and the actual publication date was 17 April 2004, with a first-edition print run of 2,000 sets. Funding for the first printing came half from the CUHK Alumni Affairs Office and half from the CUHK Student Press; printing was by Wai Mei International Printing Company, the cover was designed by Chan Lap-hang, and the editorial board comprised eight members.

The book is in two volumes across thirteen major sections, closing with a chronology, "Forty Years of CUHK: A Chronicle of Events". The six sections of Volume 1 are "Sound of Slience", "1 and 0", "Bestsellers", "Gatherings", "Something to Watch" and "Campus Structures"; the seven sections of Volume 2 are "Communities", "Grown-Ups", "On Money and Feelings", "event", "Us", "Opening the Eyes" and "So Easy (CU Link)" — section titles drawing heavily on the student vernacular and semi-Cantonese orthography of the period, in marked contrast to the chapter conventions of official university histories. No electronic edition was ever issued, but the Editorial Board set up a site at the time that put the whole book online article by article — 335 articles, still accessible today:

  • Full contents and article-by-article textcu40super contents page (the Editorial Board's own site, with links to all 335 articles and their page numbers; the site is now hosted on a GeoCities mirror service, and a first visit may require passing a browser check)
  • Student Press pagesthe CUHK at Forty page on cusp.hk and the cu40 sub-site (a second access point on the CUHK Student Press site, holding fewer articles than the above)
  • Print — held by CUHK Library, call number LG51.H55 Z47 2004

3. CUHK at Fifty (2015) — complete PDF download

The editorial board for CUHK at Fifty began forming in late 2011, convened by several former CUHK Student Union executives and former Student Press editors, and the book appeared in December 2015, four years later. It runs to two volumes, with fourteen editors, twenty-one authors and two people credited for illustration and design; printing was by Sing Tat Prepress and Printing Company Limited. Volume 1 is Book One, "Fifty Years Retrieved"; Volume 2 comprises three books, "Ideals · Tradition", "Society · Education" and "China · Hong Kong".

It is the only volume in this series with a complete electronic edition: in August 2017 both volumes were uploaded to the Internet Archive under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence (Attribution–NonCommercial–NoDerivatives), and may be freely downloaded and circulated.

4. The rest of the series

CUHK at Forty and CUHK at Fifty are not isolated volumes but part of a series of student-produced university histories running from the 1970s to the present. No electronic edition of any kind is currently available for the remaining volumes; only print copies survive in library holdings:
